Truth Thursday 2020: I need more of

“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”

(Charles M. Schulz)

Hi! How are you? It’s been a long time. And 2020 has been such a crazy year. So, I guess this is the best time to dust off Truth Thursdays, after six years of dormancy — if only just to keep track of our days and to keep us honest.

To say that the world has changed since the last Truth Thursday post would be an understatement. For the past several weeks, most of us have been stuck inside our house (or at least should be), losing track of days, trying to stay sane, attempting to wrap our minds around a present that we had never planned for. In this time inside, what were the things you needed more of but only realized just now?

Let’s talk about it for this Truth Thursday the Pandemic edition:

I need more of

Truth Thursdays 22: Happiness Is

Happiness is singing together when day is through,
And happiness is those who sing with you.
Happiness is morning and evening,
Daytime and nighttime too.
For happiness is anyone and anything at all
That’s loved by you.

(Clark Gesner, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown)

Earlier today, I was watching a video of a homeschooler, Logan LaPlante, talk about his education and how when he grows up, he just wants to be happy and healthy. He asserts that being happy and healthy is a practice that involves these eight things: exercise, diet and nutrition, time in nature, contribution and service, relationships, recreation, relaxation and stress management, and religious and spiritual participation.

Now, that got me wondering. How are we in our practice of happiness? Are we happy where we are right now? Because in the first two weeks of the year, that was my question to myself. Am I happy where I am today? What will it take to make me happy? Am I being selfish by thinking all these things?

Anyway, so let’s talk about that this Truth Thursday. Happiness.

Happiness Is…

Truth Thursday 21: All Things New

Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland.

(God, Isaiah 43:18-19)

Happy New Year! Yes, we know we went on a Sabbatical for the last few months, but now we’re back!

The best thing about the New Year is that while it’s technically just another day in our life, the mere fact that we’re back at the beginning of the calendar it’s like starting out again with a clean slate again. I don’t know about you, but that’s best part about the New Year for me. To leave behind a great/sucky year to look forward to all sorts of new things that are coming up ahead.

What are the new things that you waited until the New Year to begin? What are the old things you are swapping for the new?

Truth Thursday 20: Versus

What should I do about the wild and the tame? The wild heart that wants to be free, and the tame heart that wants to come home. I want to be held. I don’t want you to come too close. I want you to scoop me up and bring me home at nights. I don’t want to tell you where I am. I want to keep a place among the rocks where no one can find me. I want to be with you.

(Jeannette Winterson)

The world is full of contradictions–we are full of contradictions! I love what Garfield had said, “A good morning is a contradiction.” Or something like that. Everyday, we fight with ourselves, starting with the self who wants to sleep longer and not go to work in the mornings. The fight of the heart and the head, the mind and the stomach, the spirit and the flesh.

These are our daily battles, and they oftentimes define who we are. What are those battles that define you?

Truth Thursday 19: Within a Room Somewhere

If we face the fact, for it is a fact, that there is no arm to cling to, but that we go alone and that our relation is to the world of reality and not only to the world of men and women…

(Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own)

In a world where everything is connected and we can post our thoughts instantly online, where do you go to to be alone with your thoughts?

Do you still have a room for all that is just you?

Truth Thursday 18: Plan A

It was amazing how you could get so far from where you’d planned,
and yet find it was exactly were you needed to be.

(Sarah Dessen)

I used to say, “It doesn’t matter if we follow it, as long as we have a plan,” and my plans never really pan out the way I expect them to be. I tend to hold loosely to my plans, but I can never shake my need for them. I would never let go of plan A until I have Plan B to take its place. And so on, until we get to Z (although that’s never happened so far…).

But do you remember what your original plans were?

Truth Thursday 17: Oh, the places we could go!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You’re on your own.  And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.

(Dr. Seuss)

The world is big and we’re so small, and there’s still so many places to discover and stories to tell and uncover. If you’ve taken root, that’s okay as well.

So where have you been? Where are you going? Where would you want to be found?

Oh, the places we could go!

Truth Thursday 16: We Have Forgotten

What can I say, I’m a sucker for abandoned stuff, misplaced stuff, forgotten stuff, any old stuff which despite the light of progress and all that, still vanishes every day like shadows at noon, goings unheralded, passings unmourned, well, you get the drift.

(Mark Z. Danielewski)

This Truth Thursday is not so much because I had forgotten to post this on the first Thursday of this week (the second one is now happening at the other side of the world), but rather about the things that we have forgotten that we forgot. I read somewhere that that thing that happens when you step into a room and you just forget why you were there in the first place (happens to me all the time) is our brains’ way of organizing our memories—that’s why to remember, we go back to where we have come from.

What are the things that we have forgotten that we have to remember…or completely forget? Have you ever thought about this before?

Truth Thursday 15: For Your Approval

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.

As much as we would like to say that it would be nice if we just be ourselves, not caring about what other people’s opinion about us, I’m not sure if we’re really telling the truth. Because there are people out there whose opinion and perception of us do matter.

So, for today’s Truth Thursday. Let’s talk about them. Whose opinion matters to you the most? Whose approval do you seek?
